German AF4EU partner ZALF contributes expertise

ZALF expertise strengthens public discourse

The Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) is contributing its expertise to this debate. Specialist input was provided by Daniel Fischer, a research assistant in the working group “Agroeconomics and Ecosystem Services” led by Dr. agr. Peter Zander.

Practice-oriented research and networking

As a German partner in the EU-funded project AF4EU, ZALF is contributing to one of Europe’s flagship initiatives on agroforestry. The project serves as an example of how European collaboration can promote more sustainable land-use systems. In his role as innovation broker, Fischer played a key role in building the Regional Agroforestry Innovation Network (RAIN), which now has over 100 members and includes Saxony-Anhalt as a model region.

Agroforestry as a sustainable model for the future

The dossier, compiled with great dedication by specialist journalist Susanne Salzgeber, makes it clear that agroforestry protects soils, improves carbon and water storage, and enhances biodiversity. It also offers farmers a climate-adapted perspective. However, to fully tap this potential, practical funding conditions and long-term planning security are required. Through its contribution to the dossier and active engagement in networking, ZALF strengthens knowledge transfer and emphasizes its role as both a driving force for sustainable agricultural systems and a committed AF4EU partner in advancing agroforestry across Europe.
