On 22 October 2025, the National Forest Centre and the Institute of Knowledge-Based Agriculture and Innovation hosted a national seminar in Nitra, Slovakia, dedicated to agroforestry development and to the final results of the AF4EU Horizon Europe project. Held at the Institute’s headquarters, the event gathered farmers, researchers, advisors, public officers and rural organisations for a full day of presentations and open discussion.
The seminar formed part of Slovakia’s involvement in the AF4EU project, which has worked to strengthen agroforestry adoption in Europe through regional innovation networks, farmer collaboration and knowledge transfer activities. The meeting in Nitra provided space to reflect on the project’s outcomes and their relevance for Slovak agriculture and forestry, as well as to consider the national conditions shaping current agroforestry development.
A key focus of the seminar was the presentation of AF4EU project results. Speakers outlined the creation of regional innovation networks, the design of new agroforestry business models, and the development of a European knowledge platform supporting advisory services and value chains. These outcomes were discussed in relation to Slovak priorities, particularly climate adaptation, soil protection and the diversification of rural economies.
Practical experience was also highlighted throughout the event. Farmers and researchers shared on-the-ground examples demonstrating how trees and agricultural production can be integrated effectively. The programme further examined the support available for agroforestry within the CAP Strategic Plan 2023–2027, alongside the role of AKIS in transferring innovation into everyday practice.
Discussions touched on policy frameworks, funding options and technical challenges faced by land managers, showing the need for stronger cooperation between institutions, advisory bodies and producers. Research evidence and field practice illustrated several benefits associated with agroforestry systems, including improved soil fertility, greater water retention, increased climate resilience, enhanced biodiversity and new income opportunities for farmers.
The seminar attracted strong participation and offered valuable opportunities for networking and exchange. Registration was required due to limited capacity, and the event included lunch and a prize draw, fostering a positive atmosphere among participants.
Organisers thanked all speakers, partners and attendees for their contribution and for sharing experience from Slovakia and other European regions. The seminar represented an important step in the national dissemination of AF4EU results and further strengthened support for agroforestry as a pathway for rural development and environmental resilience in Slovakia.
