AF4EU: Empowering Agroforestry Innovation in Europe

🌿Welcome to AF4EU, a groundbreaking initiative that will improve European agriculture and forestry.

🌍With a dynamic consortium of 12 partners spanning 10 countries and the success experience of our previous project (AFINET), we’re creating an interactive network to share and drive innovation in agroforestry practices across Europe.

🎯 Objectives:

Enlarging the Agroforestry Innovation Network created in AFINET, stablishing 8 new RAINs (Portugal, Belgium, Ireland, Greece, France, Andalucía-Spain, Slovakia and Germany) connected to a Lighthouse RAIN (already created in AFINET – Galicia-Spain, Italy and Finland).

Improving the knowledge of agroforestry through specific dissemination activities, training and development of the advisory capacity.

– Developing an AF Knowledge Platform (KP) that will foster knowledge exchange by integrating and synthesizing existing best practices and research findings.

– Maximizing synergies with international, European, national and regional projects and policies.

🌟Join us in shaping the future of sustainable crops and forests!

AF4EU & RAINs: Innovating Agroforestry for Sustainable Communities

🔎In this video, we dive into AF4EU focusing on the role of Regional Agroforestry Innovation Networks (RAINs) in fostering sustainable agroforestry solutions.

🎙Rosa Mosquera from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), and AF4EU coordinator, introduces the concept of RAINs and their importance in bringing together key actors to drive innovation. She highlights how these networks foster collaboration and innovation, with Innovation Brokers playing a key part in facilitating knowledge exchange and practical solutions.

Then, we hear from three Innovation Brokers actively involved in these networks:

🌾Tanja Kähkönen from the European Forest Institute (EFI) shares insights on agroforestry practices in southern and eastern Finland, focusing on how they are adapted to local conditions and the challenges faced by farmers.

🐄Tobi Hallez from Ghent University (UGent) explores the integration of animals into agroforestry systems, showing how this approach enhances both productivity and sustainability in the region.

👨‍🌾Marco Lauteri from the National Research Council (CNR) highlights the impact of agroforestry on local communities in the Biodistrict of Lake Bolsena, Italy.

Discover how these regional networks are shaping the future of agroforestry in Europe! 🌍🌱

'Exploring our RAINs' series

🎥 Exploring our RAINs is a new video series that showcases the people, stories, and impact behind AF4EU’s Regional Agroforestry Innovation Networks (RAINs) 🌿🌍

🔍 Following each Innovation Broker’s point of view, we delve into agroforestry practices, the integration of animals and native species, and their impact on local communities 🐑🌳🤝

AF4EU Final Events: Brussels, Belgium

In November 2025, AF4EU held its final events in Brussels, Belgium 🇧🇪🌳, bringing together experts, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to celebrate the project’s achievements and its impact on European agroforestry. 🌱🌾

The Think Agroforestry Conference and a Parliamentary Session highlighted how agroforestry strengthens business models, improves advisory services, and can be integrated into EU policy 🇪🇺, with tools like the AFI-Bus supporting decision-making. 📊✨

These events reinforced collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the future of agroforestry as a sustainable, resilient, and multifunctional farming approach 🌿💚.

AF4EU Final Conference 'Think Agroforestry'

The Final Conference of AF4EU “Think Agroforestry: Enhancing Business Models and Advisory Services,” took place on November 10th 2025 at COPA-COGECA headquarters in Brussels.

Organised by the University of Santiago de Compostela and FEUGA, the event gathered experts, researchers and practitioners from across Europe for a full day of knowledge exchange and discussion on how agroforestry can strengthen business models, improve advisory services, and enhance farmers’ position within agricultural value chains.

AF4EU: Consortium meetings

🤝🏻We brought together our different partners to discuss progress, coordinate activities, and ensure alignment with AF4EU’s goals and timeline.

💼The meetings strengthened working relationships, facilitated knowledge sharing, and allow us to plan future project phases. These meetings are crucial for effective management and successful execution of the project.

📍We were able to held meetings in Galicia-Spain, Finland, Ireland, Greece, Italy and Slovakia.

🎒We will let you know about our next one!

RAINs activities

🌳A Regional Agroforestry Innovation Network or RAIN is a group of different actors (farmers, advisors, policy-makers, multipliers…) working together and learning from each other, with the guidance of an Innovation Broker.

🐏Our RAIN network entails 10 countries and a wide range of territories with very different characteristics and conditions. Check out more info about them here.

🗒️Keep up with the progress of each RAIN! Their activities are regularly updated and shared through this section.
