Discussing agroforestry at Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo
On October 28th and 29th, the members of our consortium gathered in the spectacular setting of the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, nestled in the heart of Orvieto’s historic old town, to kick off the presentation series for the AF4EU work packages.
Following a welcome coffee and introductory remarks, CNR initiated discussions on WP1 and the guidelines for preparing and reporting on the upcoming 4th RAIN workshop. This session saw contributions from all partners, with USC taking an especially active role. The meeting continued with ZALF’s presentation on WP2, focusing on the development of synergies among 33 agroforestry business models and operational groups. Later on it was included an in-depth discussion on integrating AF farm types and value chains with these groups, as part of the extension services materials, presented by TEAGASC under WP3.
After a brief lunch, AUA led the WP4 session, detailing the organization of dissemination materials to be produced by RAIN members. AUA also presented WP5 insights, offering feedback on interface design and interaction aspects related to the AF4EU KP prototype. Finally, FEUGA concluded the presentations with an overview of WP6, focusing on the communication of the project.
Innovation Brokers Interviews
Alongside the meeting, the FEUGA team conducted a series of interviews with various Innovation Brokers and project members, exploring recent developments of our RAINs across Europe. The interviews focused on three key thematic areas: sustainable agroforestry and agricultural practices, the integration of animals into agroforestry systems, and the role of each RAIN within its local community. These interviews will feature in the second short video of the AF4EU project, set for release in January 2025.
Visit to the Biodistrict of Lake Bolsena
The second day began with a discussion among the Innovation Brokers present, covering additional details about WP1 and planning for the upcoming RAIN workshop. Following a few final remarks, the group set off on a field trip. The first stop was Al Vecchio Pozzo Farm, where the owner showcased ecological practices, including the use of local wild plants for food, alongside agroforestry techniques that integrate sheep grazing with olive tree cultivation.
The day concluded with a visit to Lake Bolsena, Europe’s largest volcanic lake with a rich historical legacy dating back to Etruscan and Roman times. There, Giuseppe, a local fisherman, introduced us to an experimental lakeside project and shared his personal life story, deeply intertwined with the lake.
CECRA Training
On October 30th and 31st, Innovation Brokers and colleagues participated in the first CECRA Training, designed to foster innovation within networks. Key concepts covered included collaborative communication, warm and cold processes, team dynamics, network analysis, interaction patterns, and creating space for innovation.
