Organized by Ver de Terre Production, the event took place on the 10th February 2025 in the community hall of Villiers-en-Désœuvre, followed by a visit to Pierre Gegu’s agroforestry plot. The main goal was to present the progress of the AF4EU project and validate prototypes, particularly concerning the design of the interface and user interaction with a Decision Support System (DSS). The event also aimed to strengthen synergies among stakeholders.
Operational Groups Presentation
This session highlighted the role of Operational Groups (OGs) in agroforestry development in France, showing how collaboration enabled farmers to tackle challenges with innovative solutions. Coordinators such as Gonzague Leroux (Ministry of Agriculture) and Etienne Fels (Granul’haies) shared their experiences. Aude Rives also presented the GIEE Normandy project, focusing on trees in vegetable farming systems. Each presentation was followed by a Q&A session.
Agroforestry Advisor Training in AF4EU
To meet the identified needs in France, training should focus on strategic business advising, team skills, and the advisor’s role. Module 12, “Advising and Supporting Groups and Networks,” was introduced. Participant feedback showed a clear understanding of the roles of facilitator and advisor. The importance of collaborative networks and tailored advisory services was emphasized, alongside the need for comprehensive training materials. Technical knowledge gaps were identified, highlighting the need for targeted capacity-building programs.
Decision Support System (DSS) part 1
The session focused on analyzing data collection tools for the user interface design of the DSS in development. A validation workshop featured five posters outlining parameters farmers need to input into the system. Suggestions included clarifying data on farm structures, crop practices, inputs, and incorporating soil types and agroecological infrastructures. The need for data flexibility and the challenge of handling complex, interdependent information were also raised.
Decision Support System (DSS) part 2
This interactive session explored the nine blocks of the AF4EU DSS Business Model Canvas using a SWOT analysis. Each team assessed strategies for two blocks and identified potential challenges. Concrete improvements were proposed, stressing the need for localized approaches and human support to optimize the tool’s use. Due to the tool’s complexity, a half-day hands-on session would have been ideal for better understanding.
Farm Visit – Pierre Gegu
The afternoon was dedicated to visiting Pierre Gegu’s agroforestry farm in Chanu, Villiers-en-Désœuvre (Normandy). He showcased a 5-hectare plot with intercropped trees planted in 2011, aimed at reducing external inputs. The visit featured rich discussions and experience sharing among participants.
